Best Place in Turkey for Teeth: Istanbul vs Antalya

Istanbul or Antalya for dental treatment? Flights, seasons, clinic and lab infrastructure, second trips and what to do between appointments, compared fairly by an Istanbul clinic.

Istanbul or Antalya for dental treatment is one of the first choices patients make when they start looking at dental implants or veneers in Turkey, and often the least informed one. Both cities have well-run clinics, both are used by thousands of international patients, and the dentistry itself does not depend on the postcode. The differences lie in flights, seasons, the depth of the medical infrastructure behind the clinic, and how you want to spend the days when you are not in the chair.

We should say it plainly at the start: Doctor Turka is a clinic in Istanbul, in Ataköy, Bakırköy. We have an obvious interest in this question. We have tried to write the comparison we would give a friend, including the situations in which Antalya is the better choice.

The short answer

  • For the dentistry itself, a careful clinic in either city can deliver excellent results. Choose the clinic first, the city second.
  • Istanbul tends to suit patients who value year-round flight choice, have complex cases, expect a second trip in autumn or winter, or like a city break.
  • Antalya tends to suit patients treated in the warmer months who want a resort setting and have a simpler case, such as a few crowns or veneers.
  • Starting prices for comparable work are broadly similar in both cities, because clinics compete for the same patients and use the same implant and ceramic brands.

Konyaaltı beach and the mountains, Antalya

Flights and getting there

For a single visit in summer, both cities are easy to reach. The difference shows when you need flexibility.

Istanbul is one of the world's largest aviation hubs. There are direct flights from most UK, Irish, German, Austrian and Swiss airports all year round, several times a day on major routes. If your second implant appointment moves by a week because healing needs more time, rebooking is usually simple.

Antalya's airport is very busy from spring to autumn, with direct flights from many regional airports. From the UK and Ireland, winter services are reduced, and some routes connect via Istanbul. From Germany, links remain better through the winter because Antalya is a long-standing winter destination for German travellers.

Transfers: Ataköy is roughly 30-45 minutes from Istanbul Airport by car, depending on traffic, and further from Sabiha Gökçen. In Antalya the city centre is close to the airport, while resort areas can be 30-90 minutes away. At Doctor Turka, VIP airport, hotel and clinic transfers are part of the package.

Season and climate

PeriodIstanbulAntalya
March to MayMild, pleasant for walkingWarm, ideal for treatment and rest
June to AugustWarm to hot, busy with touristsVery hot; heat and sun make post-surgery swelling harder to manage
September to NovemberMild, one of the best periodsWarm, pleasant, flights still good into October
December to FebruaryCool, wet, occasionally snowMild, quieter, fewer flights from the UK and Ireland

Heat matters more than people expect. After implant surgery, dentists usually advise avoiding strong sun, saunas, hot baths and hard exercise for several days, because heat can increase swelling and bleeding. That limits what a July resort holiday can offer in the first week.

Clinics, laboratories and infrastructure

Istanbul has the largest concentration of dental clinics, dental faculties, specialist practices and dental laboratories in Turkey, alongside major hospitals. For routine cases this makes little difference. For complex ones, such as bone grafting, sinus lifts, zygomatic implants or full-mouth rehabilitation, it can mean more options for imaging, specialist input and hospital support if a medical issue arises.

Antalya's leading clinics are modern and well equipped, and many have long experience with international patients. The city's medical infrastructure is good but smaller in scale. For a typical case of crowns, veneers or a few implants in healthy bone, this is unlikely to affect your result.

In both cities, the questions that decide safety are the same: is there a 3D CBCT scan, who is the named dentist, which implant and ceramic brands are written in your plan, and what happens after you fly home. Our guide on whether it is safe to get dental implants in Turkey covers these in detail.

What to do between appointments

Most treatments leave free time: half-days during a veneer week, rest days after implant surgery, and waiting days while the lab makes crowns or a bridge.

What to avoid after surgeryLong, hot sightseeing days, alcoholSwimming, strong sun, alcohol
Food after surgeryHuge choice of soups, purées and soft dishesResort buffets or city restaurants with soft options

The real trade-off: Antalya's pools and beaches are a major draw, but after implant surgery you are usually advised to keep wounds out of pool and sea water for a period and to avoid heat. For veneers or crowns, where there is no surgical wound, a resort stay can work very well. Istanbul's attractions are easier to enjoy in short, gentle doses, which suits recovery days.

Recovery and the second trip

Most implant treatments need two visits: surgery with temporary teeth, then final teeth after about 3-6 months of healing. See how long dental implants take in Turkey for day-by-day timelines.

That second trip is where the choice of city can matter most. If your first trip is in May, the second may fall in September to November; if the first is in July, the second may be in winter. Year-round direct flights make a winter return from the UK or Ireland simpler to Istanbul. The same applies to any unplanned check-up, repair or adjustment.

Hotels and accommodation

Both cities offer packages combining treatment, hotel nights and transfers. In Istanbul, clinic hotels are usually city hotels close to the clinic, so the journey to appointments is short and predictable. In Antalya, packages often use resort hotels, which are pleasant but can be further from the clinic. Before booking in either city, ask how far the hotel is from the clinic and how long transfers take at rush hour.

Everyday practicalities

A few smaller points often tip the balance once the big questions are settled.

  • Time zone. Turkey is on UTC+3 all year, the same in both cities: two hours ahead of the UK and Ireland in summer and three in winter. Short trips cause little jet lag.
  • Language. English is widely spoken in clinics, hotels and tourist areas in both cities. Antalya's tourism industry has long served German-speaking guests, which some visitors find reassuring; in Istanbul you will find English more readily than German outside hotels and clinics.
  • Getting around. Istanbul traffic can be heavy at rush hour, so a clinic close to your hotel and organised transfers matter. Antalya is calmer, but resort hotels can be far from the city.
  • Food and water. Both cities make soft, protein-rich food easy to find. Drink bottled water, especially in the first days after surgery.
  • Companions. Someone travelling with you will find more to do in Istanbul on your rest days; in Antalya they can relax at the pool while you recover.

Who should choose which

Istanbul is likely the better fit if:

  • your case is complex (bone grafting, full-arch implants, many teeth, medical conditions),
  • your second trip may fall between November and March,
  • you want the widest choice of flights and dates,
  • you enjoy city life, food and history more than beaches.

Antalya is likely the better fit if:

  • you are having crowns, veneers or a few implants in healthy bone,
  • both trips fall between April and October,
  • you want a resort atmosphere and plan to rest by a pool on non-surgical days,
  • your nearest airport has good direct flights there.

Who neither city suits: patients with uncontrolled medical conditions, those who cannot travel twice within a year for implant treatment, or anyone who needs frequent follow-up that is easier to arrange at home. In those cases, treatment at home or a different plan may be more sensible.

Whichever city you choose

Judge the clinic, not the city. Look for named dentists, a 3D CBCT before any implant, implant and ceramic brands written into an itemised plan, a trial smile or mock-up for cosmetic work, written guarantee terms, and a coordinator you can reach after you are back home.

At Doctor Turka in Istanbul, the process starts with you leaving your contact details; a coordinator who speaks English and German calls you, a dentist assesses your case and you receive a written plan. You can see our clinic and how it works, and our starting prices and package contents are on the costs page.

Questions about this topic

Not listed? Ask us directly.

Is Istanbul or Antalya better for dental implants?

For the dentistry itself, a careful clinic in either city can deliver excellent results. Istanbul has the larger medical infrastructure and year-round direct flights, which helps with complex cases and with the second implant trip if it falls in winter. Antalya suits patients treated in the warmer months who want a resort setting and have a simpler case. Choose the clinic first and the city second.

Can I go to the beach or swim after dental implant surgery?

Dentists usually advise keeping surgical wounds out of pool and sea water for a period after surgery and avoiding strong sun, heat and hard exercise for several days, because they can increase swelling and bleeding. Follow the specific instructions your dentist gives you. For veneers or crowns, where there is no surgical wound, there are fewer restrictions.

What is the best time of year for dental treatment in Turkey?

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable in both cities: mild temperatures make recovery easier and flights are plentiful. Summer is hot, especially in Antalya, which is less ideal after surgery. Winter is quieter; Istanbul remains easy to reach, while Antalya is mild but has fewer flights from some airports.

What can I do in Istanbul between dental appointments?

On good days, a Bosphorus ferry, the historic peninsula, the bazaars, museums and cafés are all within reach, and near the clinic there is a seafront promenade and marina in Ataköy. After implant surgery, plan rest days with short walks and soft food. Istanbul restaurants make it easy to find soups and soft dishes during recovery.

Are dental prices different in Istanbul and Antalya?

Starting prices for comparable treatments are broadly similar, because clinics in both cities compete for the same international patients and use the same implant and ceramic brands. Differences come from the clinic, the materials, the brand of implant and what the package includes, not the city. Our own starting prices are on the costs page.

Which city is easier to fly to from the UK in winter?

Istanbul. It has two airports and direct flights from most UK and Irish airports all year, several times a day on major routes. Antalya has many direct flights from spring to autumn, but UK and Irish winter services are thinner and some routes connect via Istanbul. This matters most for the second implant trip.

Where is Doctor Turka located?

Doctor Turka is in Istanbul, in the Ataköy area of Bakırköy on the European side of the city. It is roughly 30 to 45 minutes by car from Istanbul Airport, depending on traffic. Packages include hotel nights and VIP airport, hotel and clinic transfers, and a coordinator who speaks English and German.
