Over the years, coffee, tea, red wine, smoking and simple ageing darken the enamel. Whitening toothpastes only remove surface stains; professional whitening uses a peroxide gel that penetrates the enamel and breaks down the pigments inside.
In-office whitening is carried out by the dental team. Your gums are protected with a barrier, the gel is applied in several short cycles and, depending on the system, activated with light. Most people see a clear difference in one appointment of about an hour to an hour and a half.
Whitening works on natural teeth only — fillings, crowns and veneers keep their colour. That is why we often recommend whitening before new restorations are made, so they can be matched to your brighter natural shade.

Why teeth darken
- Extrinsic stains from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco sit on and in the outer enamel — they respond very well to whitening.
- Ageing: enamel thins and the yellower dentine shows through more.
- Intrinsic discolouration from medication or trauma sits deeper and responds less predictably.
Who should not whiten (yet)
Whitening is postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with untreated decay or gum disease, or with very sensitive exposed roots. It is also not useful if most visible teeth are already crowned or veneered.

Is whitening bad for my enamel?
Professional whitening under dental supervision is considered safe for healthy enamel. Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect and usually fades within a day or two.

Will my crowns or fillings whiten too?
