How long do dental implants take in Turkey? For most patients the answer is two trips: a first visit of about 3-7 days for the scan and surgery, a healing period of roughly 3-6 months at home, and a second visit of about 3-7 days for the final crowns or bridge. The biology is the same in Istanbul as in London or Dublin. What differs is how the appointments are packed around that healing, so that the time you spend away from home is short.
This guide sets out what happens each day, why the gap between trips exists, what can lengthen or shorten it, and how to plan flights and time off work.
The short answer
| Treatment | Trip 1 | Healing at home | Trip 2 | Total time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-3 implants, healthy bone | 3-4 days | About 3-4 months | 3-5 days | About 4 months |
| Several implants with crowns or bridges | 4-6 days | About 3-5 months | 5-7 days | About 4-6 months |
| All-on-4 or All-on-6 per jaw | 5-7 days | About 3-6 months | 5-7 days | About 4-7 months |
| With a sinus lift or bone graft | 3-7 days | About 6-9 months | 5-7 days | About 7-10 months |
Most patients spend roughly 8-14 days in Turkey in total, split over two visits. The exact dates are written into your treatment plan.
Why implants need months, not days
An implant is a titanium screw that must fuse with living bone, a process called osseointegration. On the day of surgery it is held only by friction in the bone (primary stability). Over the following weeks, the body remodels the bone around it. There is a phase around weeks two to four when stability temporarily dips, because old bone is being replaced before new bone has fully formed. After that, new bone grows onto the implant surface and secondary stability builds up.
In the dense lower jaw this usually takes about three months. In the softer upper jaw it often takes four to six. After grafting it takes longer again. Putting heavy chewing forces on an implant during this window is one of the main causes of early failure, which is why the final, rigid crowns wait until the bone is ready.

Before trip 1
The timeline starts before you fly. You leave your contact details, a patient coordinator calls or writes, a dentist assesses your case and you receive a written, itemised plan with the proposed dates. An existing X-ray can be useful if you have one, but the decisive 3D CBCT scan is taken in the clinic on day one.
Use the weeks before travel to:
- have any necessary medical checks, particularly if you have diabetes, heart conditions or take blood thinners,
- cut down or stop smoking,
- arrange soft food and a quiet first few days back home,
- book flights with some flexibility, especially the return.
Trip 1 day by day: a few single implants
| Day | What happens | How you feel |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrival, VIP transfer to the hotel. Clinic visit: examination, 3D CBCT scan, plan confirmed, consent. | Normal; allow a couple of hours at the clinic |
| Day 2 | Surgery under local anaesthetic: implants placed, stitches, sometimes a healing cap. Typically 30-90 minutes depending on the number. | Numb for a few hours, then sore; cold packs help |
| Day 3 | Rest, soft cold food, medication on schedule. | Swelling often peaks around now |
| Day 4 | Check-up, cleaning, instructions, temporary tooth if one is planned. Fly home. | Mild tenderness; usually able to travel |
If a tooth needs extracting at the site, it may happen on day 2 as well. For front teeth, a temporary crown or a small removable replacement is usually provided so you do not fly home with a gap. More on single tooth implants.

Trip 1 day by day: All-on-4 or All-on-6
| Day | What happens | How you feel |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrival and transfer. Examination, CBCT, photos, medical review, final plan and consent. | Normal |
| Day 2 | Surgery: remaining teeth removed, bone shaped if needed, implants placed. Often 2-3 hours per jaw, local anaesthetic with or without sedation. Scan or impressions for the temporary bridge. | Numb, then sore and swollen; rest at the hotel |
| Day 3 | Rest. The fixed acrylic temporary bridge is being made. | Swelling and bruising usually peak |
| Day 4-5 | Temporary bridge fitted, bite adjusted. | First fixed teeth; liquids and very soft food |
| Day 6-7 | Final check, cleaning instructions, soft-food diet sheet. Fly home. | Improving daily; most people feel fit to travel |
A fixed temporary is only fitted when the implants reach sufficient stability during surgery; otherwise you may leave with a temporary denture instead. More on All-on-4 in Turkey.
The healing gap at home
| Period | What is happening | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Soft tissue healing, stitches dissolve or are ready to come out | Soft, cool food; rinse gently; no smoking; follow medication |
| Weeks 2-6 | Early bone remodelling, the most sensitive phase | Soft diet, especially with a full-arch temporary; careful cleaning |
| Months 2-6 | New bone forms on the implant surface | Normal life; still no hard biting on temporaries; video check-in with the coordinator |
| Before trip 2 | Implants ready to load | Confirm dates; tell us about any looseness, pain or swelling |
Most people return to desk work within 2-4 days of surgery, often working remotely from the hotel from day 3 or 4. Physical jobs and hard exercise are usually paused for about a week. Your coordinator stays in touch and passes any questions to the dentist.

Trip 2 day by day
| Day | Crowns on individual implants | Full-arch bridge |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrival; implant stability checked, X-ray, digital scan or impressions | Arrival; temporary removed, implants checked, scan or impressions, bite record |
| Day 2-3 | Crowns made; abutments tried in | Try-in of the framework or a prototype; shape, colour and bite approved |
| Day 4-5 | Crowns fitted, bite adjusted, X-ray to check fit | Final bridge made |
| Day 6-7 | Spare day or fly home | Final bridge screwed in, bite adjusted, cleaning training, night guard if needed; fly home |
At the end of trip 2 you receive your implant passport, X-rays and a treatment summary for your dentist at home.
When extractions, bone grafts or a sinus lift change the timeline
Not every case follows the standard path. The CBCT scan shows whether there is enough bone, and that decides the sequence.
| Situation | Typical approach | Effect on timing |
|---|---|---|
| Tooth removed, healthy bone, no infection | Implant placed on the same day (immediate implant) | No extra delay |
| Tooth removed with infection or thin bone | Socket heals first, implant later | Adds about 2-3 months, sometimes a separate trip |
| Minor bone deficit | Small graft at the time of implant placement | Healing may be extended by a month or two |
| Upper molar area with a low sinus floor | Sinus lift, with or without simultaneous implants | Healing often 6-9 months before final teeth |
| Major bone loss | Block graft or alternatives such as tilted or zygomatic implants | Several months, possibly an extra trip |
Read more about bone grafting and sinus lifts. Where tilted implants can avoid a graft, as in All-on-4, the overall timeline is often shorter.
Same-day dental implants in Turkey: what is realistic
"Same day implants" usually means an implant placed and a temporary tooth or bridge attached on the day of surgery or within a few days. That is common and well documented when the implants reach high initial stability. It does not mean final teeth in a day.
- Immediate temporary teeth on full-arch implants: routine, if stability allows.
- Immediate temporary crown on a single front implant: common, kept out of the bite.
- Final crowns or a final zirconia bridge on fresh implants in one week: possible in selected cases with excellent bone, but not a sensible standard. Final restorations made before healing cannot account for gum shrinkage and bone changes in the first months.
A clinic that promises everyone final teeth on brand-new implants in a single week is prioritising the calendar over the bone. For more on what separates careful and rushed clinics, see is it safe to get dental implants in Turkey.
Planning flights and time off work
- Leave: one week for each trip covers most cases; single implants can fit into a long weekend plus two days.
- Flights: Istanbul has direct flights from most UK, Irish and German airports all year round. Book the trip 2 return with flexibility, because healing can move the date by a week or two.
- Timing: avoid scheduling surgery right before an important event. Swelling and bruising can take 7-10 days to fade completely.
- Companions: after a full-arch operation or sedation, travelling with someone is recommended.
- Flying after surgery: most patients fly home a few days later; your dentist tells you when it is safe, especially after a sinus lift.
What can delay the second trip
- Slower healing in the upper jaw or after grafting.
- An implant that did not integrate and needs replacing.
- Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes or infection during healing.
- A temporary bridge that broke because of hard food.
- Gum tissue that needs more time to mature before the final shape is recorded.
None of these is unusual, and the plan can be adjusted. The written guarantee terms in your plan explain what happens in each case.
