Zirconia crowns in Turkey: what you need to know
Zirconium dioxide — zirconia — is a high-performance ceramic that is several times stronger than conventional porcelain. It is the material of choice where chewing forces are high: molars, long bridges, implant-supported crowns and patients who grind their teeth.
Monolithic zirconia is milled from a single block and is almost unbreakable. Layered zirconia has a strong zirconia core covered with aesthetic porcelain for more depth and translucency in the visible zone. Modern multi-layer zirconia blanks also have a built-in colour gradient that looks increasingly natural.
Types of Zirconia crowns
Which option suits you is decided together with your dentist — based on your examination, not a catalogue.
Monolithic zirconia
Milled from one block; the most fracture-resistant option for molars.
Layered zirconia
Zirconia core with porcelain layering for more depth in visible areas.
Multi-layer zirconia
Built-in colour gradient — strong and increasingly natural-looking.

Zirconia crowns procedure step by step
Before you travel, you know what happens on which day.
- 01
Check and plan
Examination, X-rays and a digital plan for each tooth.
- 02
Prepare and scan
Teeth are shaped and scanned; temporaries are fitted.
- 03
Milling and sintering
Crowns are milled from zirconia blocks, sintered and characterised.
- 04
Try-in and cementation
Fit, colour and bite are checked before final cementation.
Why zirconia is the standard for back teeth
Molars carry chewing forces of several hundred newtons. Monolithic zirconia withstands these forces better than any other tooth-coloured material, and it does not chip because there is no layered porcelain on top. That makes it the safest choice for molars, bridges and implant crowns — especially for people who clench or grind.
Zirconia on implants
Zirconia crowns on implants can be screw-retained (removable by the dentist for maintenance) or cemented. Screw-retained crowns are often preferred on implants because they avoid excess cement under the gum and make future maintenance easier.
How zirconia crowns are made
- Digital scan of the prepared tooth or implant.
- Computer design of the crown shape and bite.
- Milling from a pre-shaded zirconia block.
- Sintering in a high-temperature furnace.
- Staining, glazing and final polishing by hand.

Do zirconia crowns look natural?
Modern multi-layer and layered zirconia can look very natural. For single upper front teeth with high aesthetic demands, E.max may still offer a little more translucency.
Can zirconia crowns chip?
Monolithic zirconia is extremely chip-resistant. Layered versions can occasionally chip at the porcelain surface, which is why monolithic zirconia is recommended for molars.
Are zirconia crowns good for people who grind?
Monolithic zirconia is one of the best options for grinders, ideally combined with a night guard.
How long do zirconia crowns last?
Commonly 10–15 years or longer. The weakest link is usually the tooth or gum, not the zirconia itself.
Can zirconia crowns be adjusted later?
Minor bite adjustments are possible with polishing. Larger changes require a new crown.
