Kanye West’s Teeth: What His Titanium “Dentures” Really Are — and What a Dentist Would Do Instead

When Kanye West posted a close-up of a mouth full of grey metal in January 2025, the internet did two things at once: compared him to the James Bond villain Jaws, and asked "what on earth is that?". According to his own posts and follow-up interviews with the dentist involved, the set is a fixed prosthesis made largely of titanium, reportedly costing more than $850,000 — "more expensive than diamonds", as he put it.

Is it really a denture?

Not in the everyday sense. A denture is removable and rests on the gums. What West appears to wear is a fixed, custom-milled framework that sits over prepared teeth or implants and does not come out. Titanium is the same metal used for implant posts, so it is biocompatible and extremely strong — but it is normally hidden inside the jaw, not shown as the visible tooth surface.

Why dentists were uneasy

Two things concern most dentists who commented publicly:

1. What had to happen to the natural teeth underneath. Any full-arch fixed restoration on natural teeth requires them to be reduced (shaved) to make room. Once enamel is gone, it is gone. West has spoken about earlier extensive work, so it is likely there was not much natural tooth left to protect — but for a person with healthy teeth this would be an irreversible decision made for style.
2. Metal as a visible surface. Modern dentistry spent twenty years moving away from visible metal towards ceramics that mimic enamel. A metal surface shows every scratch, conducts temperature, and cannot be colour-matched later.

What a smile makeover normally looks like

The realistic version of a "new smile" is far less dramatic and far more conservative:

• Porcelain (E.max) veneers — 0.3–0.7 mm ceramic shells bonded to the front of healthy teeth. Most enamel stays.
• Zirconia crowns — for teeth that are already heavily filled, cracked or root-treated. Strong enough for grinders, tooth-coloured, no metal edge.
• Implants with a zirconia bridge — when teeth are missing or cannot be saved. Titanium does the work inside the bone; ceramic does the looking good.

A good clinic plans this with a digital mock-up first, so you see and approve the shape and shade before anything is fixed.
