Turkey — and Istanbul in particular — is one of the world's most popular destinations for dental treatment. Many clinics there work to a very high standard. But popularity also attracts providers who put speed and volume first. Here is how to tell the difference.

Ten questions to ask any clinic

1. Who will treat me? Ask for the dentists' names and qualifications.
2. Can I see a written, tooth-by-tooth plan? Vague packages like "20 crowns" without explanation are a warning sign.
3. Why this treatment? A good dentist explains why a tooth needs a crown rather than a veneer — or no treatment at all.
4. Which materials and implant brands do you use? And will I receive documentation?
5. Do you take a 3D scan before implant surgery? This should be standard.
6. How long will the treatment take? Be wary of timelines that seem too fast for the work involved.
7. What sterilisation protocols do you follow?
8. What does the guarantee cover — and how does it work if I live abroad?
9. What happens if the plan changes after the examination? You should always be asked before anything is added.
10. Who do I contact after I get home?

Red flags

• Over-treatment. Recommending crowns on healthy teeth that could be treated with veneers — or with nothing at all.
• Aggressive preparation. Grinding healthy teeth down to small stumps for a "Hollywood smile".
• Pressure to decide quickly, for example with discounts that expire within hours.
• No named dentist, only a brand or a salesperson.
• No documentation of materials, implant brands or X-rays.

Careful clinics show you their dentists, explain alternatives, choose the most conservative option that will last, and give you everything in writing. They preview aesthetic results with a mock-up, take the time the treatment needs and stay in touch after you return home.
